TLIF Surgery

What is TLIF Surgery?

TLIF (Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion) surgery is a spinal fusion technique for the lower back. In the surgery, a portion of the spinal disc is removed from between the two spinal bones and a spacer, supported by screws and rods, is placed in its place to join them. Removing the spinal disc and fusion of the vertebrae or the two spinal bones reduces the patient’s back pain by reducing the compression on nerves. It eliminates motion in that spinal segment alleviating sciatica back and leg pain.

Some of the other conditions a TLIF surgery treats are as follows:

  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Lumbar radiculopathy
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spondylosis
  • Pseudarthrosis
  • Spinal instability
  • Recurrent disc herniation
  • Scoliosis

How do our experts perform the TLIF surgery? The patient is put under general anaesthesia when the surgery is performed. The surgeon makes an incision at the affected spinal level from where spinal facets are removed giving access to the disc space.

Risks Involved with the TLIF Surgery

The TLIF surgery usually leads to a significant improvement in back pain, leg pain, disability, or physical function as seen by the patients but it has its own risks:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection and delayed wound healing
  • Failure of fusion
  • Adjacent segment degeneration
  • Implant loosening
  • Dural tear & CSF leak

These risks while rare can sometimes lead to the need for reoperations which is why an expert doctor and caring team are needed by the patients which we provide.  During the post-surgical period, our team takes care of the patient by closely monitoring them for any signs of infections, or discomfort and provides them with physical therapy for fast and better recovery.

Some Common Questions Patients have about TLIF surgery

TLIF surgery is a routine major surgery . But now adays , TLIF is done with a small incision , under General anaesthesia in a very safe manner, with high success rates. Dr Neeraj Gupta is doing more than 100 TLIF procedures every year , and has experience of more than 2000 TLIF surgeries

Usually we make the patient to stand and walk , next day after surgery . The usual recovery time for a TLIF surgery patient ranges from six to twelve weeks but it depends highly on the patient. Our team ensures proper care for the patient no matter how long it takes them to recover to help them return to normal without any pain or discomfort.

Patients usually start to walk the same day after the TLIF surgery under our expert’s guidance.

While there are alternatives like ALIF, laminectomy, PLIF and more to TLIF surgery, the decision depends on the signs and symptoms exhibited by the patient.
