Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery

What is Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery?

A Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery is a mini spinal surgery in which our surgeons make a small incision of about half an inch each through the skin to place a small metal tube, also known as an endoscope to work through a small operative field. This tube gently moves aside the muscles and soft tissues around the area which helps the surgeon to work on the spine using special operating microscopes, high-resolution cameras, and real-time X-ray on the spine. The small incision causes less damage to the muscles and soft tissues of the patient leading to faster recovery and less pain after the surgery. Since it is a small surgery, the patients are usually discharged within 23 hours or less as advised by our resident experts.

Is the patient given any numbing medicine before surgery? Yes, a patient is injected with general anaesthesia before the surgery for a smooth and comfortable surgery.

Who needs Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery?

Patients often complain of back pain but not all of them need surgery. Most of the back problems are treatable with physical therapy, medicine, or chiropractic care. It is only advised by our doctors to undergo a Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery if the patient is in a lot of pain and only spinal surgery can fix the problem.

While Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeries can not fix all types of back problems they can help if the patient has one of the following conditions:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spinal deformities
  • Spinal instability
  • Scoliosis
  • Herniated disc
  • Fractured vertebra
  • Spinal infection
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Pars defect
  • A tumour in the spine

This mini-surgery helps the patients go about their daily lives without pain but needs to be tailored according to the patient and the technique being used for performing the surgery which makes it important to decide on a good doctor and team to carry it out.

Risks Involved with Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery

There is no treatment without risks. Even a Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery has its own risks which largely depend on the patient’s age, general health, type of surgery they undergo and the like. It is important to undergo the surgery no matter how small under the guidance of an experienced professional to lower the risks posed by it. It is as important to lower the risks involved as it is to be aware of them before going through surgery to make the best-informed decision.

Some of the risks involved in the Minimal Invasive Spine Surgery are as follows:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Nerve damage
  • Blood clots
  • Infection
  • Pain at the graft site
  • Spinal fluid leak
  • Anaesthesia complications
  • Not enough relief of back pain

While there are risks involved with the surgery, our team is expert at not only performing the surgery but also caring for our patients after it which has our patients at lesser risk.
