Spinal Deformity Correction

What is Spinal Deformity?

Spinal deformity is a multiplex change which occurs in the sagittal, coronal or planes which can appear alone or in combination. It is treated through a correction surgery to help patients with kyphosis, scoliosis, trauma, ankylosing spondylitis or others.

The spinal deformity correction surgery is a complex process of surgical bone adjustment or bone modification. If a bone grows incorrectly and results in a disease or condition like knock knees, or bowlegs a spinal deformity surgery is advised by our doctors.  This corrective surgery may also be used for hands, fingers, arms, legs, knees, or ankles growing at incorrect angles or lengths. The main aim of the deformity surgery is a balanced spinal alignment to prevent further deformity for the patient to alleviate neurological symptoms faced by them. This is done through rigid fusion of the coronal and sagittal curvature.

Types and Indications of Spinal Deformity

Spinal Deformity is of many types and based on these types can cause symptoms like back pain, fatigue, stooping, spinal instability, and even compression of the heart or lungs which has been seen to cause breathing difficulties in patients. The spinal deformity symptoms are not only felt by the patient but are also visible to other people.

The types of Spinal Deformity are as follows:

  • Kyphosis: causes excessive rounding of the upper back, commonly seen as a hunchback
  • Scoliosis: causes abnormal curvature of the spine sideways which resembles an ‘S’ or ‘C’ curve
  • Lordosis: causes excessive inward spinal curvature
  • Flatback syndrome: causes lumbar spine to lose lordosis

Some of the symptoms of Spinal Deformity are as follows:

  • Difference in hip or shoulder height
  • Difference in the arm length
  • Visibly off-centre spine
  • A hunchback
  • A head which appears off-centre with the body
  • Stooped forward posture
  • Inability to stand straight

When is a Spinal Deformity Correction Surgery Considered?

Before considering any surgery, our experts try non-operative treatments like pain medication, physical therapy, braces, etc.  It is only suggested by our doctors if any of the other methods are not working for the patient.

In case any of the following symptoms are experienced by the patient, the Spinal Deformity surgery is recommended

  • The pain experienced by patients is severe and is not relieved by any non-operative methods
  • Spinal Deformity is a result of fractures usually because of osteoporosis
  • The Spinal Deformity is progressing
  • It has caused a physical deformity
  • Spinal Deformity has led to the compression of the spinal cord or any nerve roots
  • The issue will continue to progress even after skeletal growth is complete
