Kyphoplasty

What is Kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure performed by our surgeons to treat compression fractures caused by osteoporosis or spinal tumours. These fractures are painful breaks in the spinal bones, also known as vertebrae, and can cause the bones in a patient’s spine to collapse or curve which makes it look like they are hunched over. The most painful complaint by the patients is that it affects their breathing and abdominal organs, limiting it.

Kyphoplasty takes less than an hour and offers patients relief from pain within days. It prevents patients’ spine from curving and helps maintain their posture and spinal health.

What does Kyphoplasty treat?

Kyphoplasty treats thinning or weakening of bones, spinal injuries, and pathologic fractures caused by underlying conditions like multiple myeloma, and spinal tumours. It does not treat conditions like disc herniation, arthritis, or stenosis.

Why go for Kyphoplasty as a patient?

The team of doctors consulting a patient can recommend ways of treatment of their issues but it is on the patient to decide whether they want to go for the recommended procedure or not. If your doctor has recommended Kyphplasty to you and you are unsure whether you should go for it or not here are the risks and benefits of Khyphoplasty which can help you decide.

Benefits of Kyphoplasty:

  • Reduce or eliminate pain caused by compression or pathologic fractures
  • Prevent hunching of the back
  • Short duration of surgery
  • Minimally invasive, meaning small incision
  • No after-physical therapy or rehabilitation required

Risks involved:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Increase in pain, numbness, tingling
  • Nerve damage
  • Additional fractures in case of osteoporosis
  • Migration of cement to other body parts leading to pulmonary, spinal stenosis or embolism

What can you expect from Kyphoplasty?

During Kyphoplasty, the patient is under the influence of general anaesthesia or moderate sedation to make them comfortable during the surgery and feel no pain. The team of surgeons insert a hollow needle, trocar, through the patient’s skin into the spinal bone which needs to be operated on using fluoroscopy, which is a type of X-ray. After the trocar is in place, the surgeon puts an inflatable device into the spinal bones which inflates and helps the spine regain vertebral height. This opens up a space for the surgeon to inject bone cement which prevents bone from collapsing further in on the patient.

It is an outpatient surgery which our team of surgeons perform in our hospital. This means that the patient is allowed to go home the very same day and is advised to rest since they have been operated on. It is recommended to return to normal life activities slowly and avoid hard lifting until the health of the patient’s bones improves.
