Spinal Injections

Why Spinal Injections?

Spinal Injections are recommended by doctors when a patient’s neck or back problem turns severe enough that it is not responding to conservative measures.

Usage:

  • Diagnostic: diagnose the source of pain in back, leg, neck, arm
  • Therapeutic: a treatment to relieve pain

Spinal Injections are usually a part of a more comprehensive treatment program where simultaneous treatment might include an exercise program for improving or maintaining the mobility of the spine by stretching and spinal stability by strengthening exercises.

How are Spinal Injections performed by our experts?

They are always performed under X-ray Guidance which is known as fluoroscopy to know the correct placement of the medicine and ensure safety. To do this a liquid dye is injected before the spinal injection, which if flows to the correct location leads to the injection of the medicine. If the dye does not go to the correct location the needle is repositioned and additional dye is injected until it gets corrected to inject the medication.

Spinal Injections Types

  • Epidural Injection- These injections are used to treat pain starting in the spine and radiating to the arm or leg. They are used to diagnose the source of pain as well.
  • Facet Joint Injection- Performed into and around the facet joints, these injections are done for both diagnostic and therapeutic reasons to treat neck, middle back, or lower back pain.
  • Sacroiliac Joint Injection- Similar to facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections can be used for both therapeutic and diagnostic purposes for problems in the SI joints causing pain in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.
  • Trigger Point Injection- A combination of general anaesthesia and anti-inflammatory is injected into the problem area of the patient to treat conditions like tension headache, myofascial pain syndrome, and fibromyalgia. It is similar to dry needling.
  • Provocation Discography- This spinal injection is to identify the source of pain and does not have any pain-relieving effects.

Possible Complications and Side Effects

While spinal injection procedures are usually safe procedures, there is always a possibility of complications to arise which are generally mild and self-limited. Some set of complications related to steroids are as follows:

  • Infection
  • Nerve injury
  • Paralysis
  • Spinal headache
  • Weakening of muscles
  • Arachnoiditis
  • Bleeding

To avoid these complications, it is necessary for patients to get spinal injections under the guidance of an expert who knows the risks involved with steroids. This reduces the risk of complications by a large margin for the patient’s well-being.

Some side effects from spinal injections include:

  • Increase in appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Increase in blood sugar, temporary
  • Irregularities in menstruation
  • Nausea
  • Facial flushing
